Five Best Mobile Fitness Apps

Mobile fitness apps have
changed the way people create, record, and reach fitness goals, thanks to cellphones and mobile devices that put a powerful computer right in your pocket. Here's a look at five of the best mobile fitness apps.

Immediacy and consistency are keys to reaching fitness goals. If your gym is right next to your work, you're more likely to go. If it's easy to record the weight you just lifted or the miles you just ran, you're more likely to track your progress and be motivated by it. The following applications, designed for various mobile platforms, offer a range of tools for tracking and measuring your fitness goals.

CardioTrainer (Android, Basic: Free, Premium: $2.99)

Five Best Mobile Fitness Apps

CardioTrainer is a well-rounded Android application focused on running and other cardio activities. It tracks your runs via GPS, counts the steps you've taken, and supports workout recording for everything from distance ran to yoga classes at your local gym. CardioTrainer's features focus on helping you while you're actually in motion, including pausing your workout routine when you get stuck at stop lights, integrated music playback, and voice notifications to update you on how far you've run, how long you've been running, calories burned, and more. The free version of CardioTrainer includes nearly all the functionality of the premium app, the premium version adds in a weight loss training module and the ability to race against yourself to beat your best times.

RunKeeper (Android/iOS, Free)

Five Best Mobile Fitness Apps

RunKeeper was one of the early running applications available for the iPhone and has since expanded to include Android phones. RunKeeper combines GPS tracking, map integration, music management, and more into a polished application. All of your RunKeeper activities, including those you enter in manually, are aggregated on the phone and your RunKeeper dashboard—accessible through the main RunKeeper web site. You can keep your stats to yourself for personal review, or you can share them easily thanks to integration with Twitter and Facebook.

iFitness (iOS, $1.99)

Five Best Mobile Fitness Apps

If you're more interested in tracking weight lifting and stationary fitness routines than running and cardio activity, iFitness has you covered. iFitness has a catalog of over 300 exercises ranging from those requiring cable machines and free weights to exercises you can do without any equipment. You can easily mix together exercises to create custom routines. If you need help setting up a weight-lifting regimen, iFitness includes 20 routines designed by fitness experts. Should you ever need a refresher on proper form, each exercise cataloged in iFitness has clear pictures and videos to show you how to do the exercise safely and effectively. Endomondo (Android/Blackberry/iOS/Misc, Free)

Five Best Mobile Fitness Apps

It would be more accurate to call Endomondo a fitness social network than simply a fitness application. Endomodo, the application, is available for Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Palm, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, LG, Eten, and Garmin devices. You'd be hard pressed to find a portable device or phone with GPS-capabilities that they aren't working on bringing into the Endomondo network. With Endomodo installed on your mobile device, you can track where you run, how long you run, check your personal best times, and share them with friends. From the Endomondo site, you can view exercise summaries, issue invites and challenges to get your friends involved in your fitness push, and participate in site-wide challenges. Endomondo is a cross-platform running app with a huge network of fellow runners built right in.

SportyPal (Android/Blackberry/iOS/Misc, Free)

Five Best Mobile Fitness Apps

Endomondo isn't the only fitness app with a wide reach across platforms, SportyPal is available for Android, Blackberry, iOS, Windows Mobile, as well as Java and Symbian-based phones. Fire up SportyPal when you're in motion whether you're running or roller blading, and it measures your distance, speed, calories burned, and more. Later you can sync your data up to your web-based profile and see all the stats gathered from your exercise routine charted out. If you're an outdoor sports enthusiast and you cover a lot of ground hiking or mountain biking SportPal can even display your route on a topographical map for a 3D-style representation of your exercise adventures.

However, most of them are not suited for latest touch screen mobile devices from HTC, Samsung and other manufactures. Windows mobile 6.5 compatible Whip2Snap is a useful program that does this job easily on high end devices.  It works well with HTC HD2, HTC HD, Samsung Omnia and other accelerometer enabled Windows handsets.

Use the iPhone Icon Generator Make a Custom iPad Homepage

If you want a start page for you iPad that blends in with the iPad's interface, the iPhone Icon Generator combined with a tiny bit of HTML is the foundation for a customizable and eye-catching start page.
Lifehacker reader Jack Kennedy wasn't impressed with available start pages so he designed his own, seen above.

If you're following in Jack's footsteps you can hit up Google Images to grab site logos like Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, and more. Once you have all the logos you want, head over to iPhone Icon Generator and tweak your logos the way you want.

Use the iPhone Icon Generator Make a Custom iPad Homepage

When you've polished up all your icons with the generator it's just a matter of throwing them in an HTML editor and making a simple 6x9 table and picking a background image. Alternately you could view the source code on Jack's page and copy it, updating the icons and links to fit your new shortcuts.

Have a tip, trick, or bit of code to share? Let's hear about it in the comments. Thanks Jack!

Use the Magic Trackpad with your Windows PC

Posted by Junaid August 3, 2010

magic trackpad

Apple’s latest hardware, the Magic Trackpad, appears to be a much more ergonomic way of controlling and interacting with a computer sans the traditional mouse.

The multi-touch enabled Magic Trackpad has no buttons but you can tap anywhere on its large surface to click or double-click. You can use two fingers to scroll page page while swiping with four fingers will let you switch between open applications.

Using Magic Trackpad with a Windows PC

The stuff looks tempting but Apple’s marketing brochure clearly states that you need a Bluetooth-enabled Mac computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard in order to use the Magic Trackpad. There’s absolutely no mention of Windows anywhere in the specs.
That said, it appears that you can actually use Apple’s Magic Trackpad with your Windows desktop. First comes this confirmation from a CNET writer who says:
Though the wording on the box claims a Mac is necessary, we successfully paired the Magic Trackpad with a Windows PC. Unfortunately, Windows functionality is limited to single-touch and click functions only – we couldn’t get multitouch settings such as pinch-to-zoom and tap-to-click to work on the Magic Trackpad.
Will Smith too got the Trackpad to work with Windows without Boot Camp. He writes:
Magic Trackpad isn’t particularly magic on Windows, unless you’re boot camping.
While none of these people sound too excited about using the Magic Trackpad on Windows, if you would still like to get the thing working on your “pure” Windows machine (not through Boot Camp), here are the exact steps involved as shared by an Engadget reader.

Install Magic Trackpad on Windows (without Boot Camp)

trackpad bootcamp error

Step 1: Download this small patch from the Apple website but don’t run it yet. It’s an executable file but it won’t run on your Windows Desktop since it is intended only for users who are running Windows inside a Mac desktop using Boot Camp.

Step 2. Download a copy of 7-zip and extract the contents of the exe file that you’ve downloaded in the previous step.

Step 3. This will create a new file called “BootCampUpdate32.msp” – extract the contents of this file as well using 7-zip again.

Step 4. You’ll now have several sub-folders that are named like BootCamp3135*. One of these folders will have a file called “Binary.AppleWirelessTrackpad_Bin” – just add a .exe extension to this file and then double-click to run it.

trackpad windows driver

This will install the Apple Wireless Trackpad driver on your Windows machine without requiring Boot Camp and you should now be able to pair the Magic Trackpad with the PC.

The Trackpad device driver is available for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 computers.

How to easily Jailbreak an iPhone with JailbreakMe?

Posted by Junaid August 2, 2010

JailbreakMe is an extremely easy method to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod running iPhone OS 3.1.2 or higher, yes this includes iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod touch.
JailbreakMe is entirely browser based and probably the easiest method around to jailbreak any compatible iOS device, if you still aren’t convinced here are the steps:

How to easily Jailbreak an iPhone with JailbreakMe

    jailbreak iphone 4
  • First you should backup your iPhone with iTunes just in case something doesn’t work
  • Open Safari on your iPhone and go to JailbreakMe.com
  • At the JailbreakMe screen (like screenshot), run your finger on the ’slide to jailbreak’ slider to start the jailbreak process
  • The jailbreak will now be downloaded to your iPhone and run itself, so don’t do anything and just let it run
  • Wait for the “Cydia has been added to your home screen.” pop up message, this tells you the jailbreak is complete

jailbreak successful cydia

  • Reboot your iPhone by turning it on and off
Amazingly enough, that’s it. The JailbreakMe process requires no downloads or USB tethering to a computer, it is entirely contained within the Safari browser and works very well. This is quite impressive and without a doubt the most simple and easiest jailbreak around to date.

Remember, a jailbreak is not a carrier unlock. The iPhone 4 carrier unlock is expected to be released soon, so have patience if you’re looking to bring your iPhone over to another network.

Jailbreak FAQ and Troubleshooting

Is jailbreaking illegal? – no, not anymore, but it may void your warranty with Apple. If you need to take your iPhone into service and you have a jailbroken device, it’s best for you to restore the iPhone.

How do I undo a Jailbreak? – you can reverse any jailbreak by simply hooking your iPhone up to a computer and then clicking the ‘Restore’ button within iTunes. This will restore the iPhone to factory defaults, which depending on your backup status you may lose data stored on your iPhone.

FaceTime and MMS aren’t working anymore! – early users of JailbreakMe may have experienced a problem with MMS and Facetime on their device after installing the jailbreak. This has since been fixed and jailbreakme has been updated, but if you happened to experience these problems all you need to do is the following: Update Cydia then Reset Network Settings. That will fix it. If for whatever reason updating Cydia doesn’t resolve the problem, you can try this command:

chmod 755 /private/var/mobile/Library; chmod 755 /private/var/mobile/Library/Preference
Then you need to Reset Network Settings – FaceTime and MMS will work fine again.
